In a tropical countries and islands like Reunion Island the way to aircondition is the Solar Air Conditionning.
In fact, the Solar Air Conditionners are still in research and there is very little informations about some commercial products. But hopefully soon here at the Reunion Island we’ll see some solar air conditionners in action. It would be a real pleasure to see the sun in action. As for now, there is like 70% of Solar Water Heaters installed through the island and so the advantages of the solar energy is clear, but the air conditionning industry is still using conventionnal electric air conditioners, even if every year we see some enhancements and energy efficiency in those devices.
But those devices does consume too much energy. And the energy is mostly produced by Diesel Power plants or in small percentage of Solar pannels and hydro energy.
So what’s the options? One of them can be the hybrid air conditioners. One article I saw the hybrid air conditioner in action is this article here.

Hybrid solar air-conditioners not only allow consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and go ‘green’, but also substantially reduce air-conditioning power costs by between 35% and 40%. “Air-conditioning accounts for up to 60% of any building’s power costs which makes the GrundAir hybrid solar air-conditioners an excellent solution to escalating power costs,” he said.
Solar Air conditioners are certainly the future, since where we need the to cool some rooms or buildings, the sun shines…. -:).
The only question is when those devices will finaly hit the consumer market and which price one will need to pay to get one of those devices installed on a house. I hope that those devices will not be too expensive though.
