Artificial photosynthesis is based on the concept of a dye analogous to chlorophyll absorbing light and thus generating electrons which enter the conduction band of a high surface area semiconductor film and further move through an external circuit, thus converting light into “green” power.

They want to be the leading supplier of 3rd Generation Solar Technology. Let’s see. Who am I talking about. A company called Dyesol.



Together with Queensland Technology University they are developing a solution of innovative solar cell technology that re-envisions windows as clear, clean energy providers.

This is a two-step photovoltaic process, unlike the one step process of conventional PV.

The panels are composed of “an electrolyte, a layer of titania (a pigment used in white paints and tooth paste), and ruthenium dye sandwiched between glass. Light striking the dye excites electrons which are absorbed by the titania to become an electric current.”

Dye solar cells are cheaper and require less energy to manufacture than silicon cells, since they don’t require expensive raw materials. They also produce electricity more efficiently, even in instances of “shadowing”, where overcast skies and shadows from trees and other buildings can cause a loss in collected power.
