Zipcar now offers Electric cars for share – with Chevy Volt
Zipcar has announced that the Chevy Volt will be part of the fleet in Chicago. As for now there is 5 Chevy Volts available, but soon there will be 20 more.
As there are charging stations through the city – with locations at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, and also in the Loop, South Loop, River North, Gold Coast, Streeterville, Lincoln Park, and Albany Park.
Those charging stations were installed by 350Green. The Chevy Volts will be located there actually and the Zipcar members can rent an electric vehicle for $10/hour. The Volt can be driven during 35 miles as a “Full Electric”. Passed this milleage, the gas engine starts and the trip continues as a standard, ordinary vehicle. But usually, in the city, you don’t go further than 35 miles so it must be enjoyable to drive in complete silence.
“We are looking forward to providing our Chicago Zipsters with increased opportunities to reduce their environmental impact and drive some of the most technologically-advanced vehicles on the road as we roll out this EV program over the coming months,” said Charles Stephens, general manager, Zipcar Chicago.
This was the first time I have heard that car sharing company has added Electric car as a valuable alternative to conventional cars, and it’s really exciting. Hopefully in Europe, there will be other car rentals and car sharing companies following this example.
Enjoy..
